GIVE YOUR DOG PLENTY OF H20 WHILE HUNTING

When hunting, dogs work hard. In fact, studies show that a dog working in the field retrieving waterfowl, flushing game and running through thick brush can lose twice the amount of water over a short time as a dog that is sitting in the kennel or on the couch. Keeping your dog hydrated in the field is very important. A few years ago, several dogs died on opening day of pheasant season in South Dakota as a result of dehydration and exhaustion.

Every year on the first Saturday in March in Anchorage, Alaska, the Iditarod Sled Dog Race begins. At each check point along the trail, dogs are met by veterinarians when they pull into the check point with their musher. One of the main tasks of the vet is checking each dog for dehydration. Some of the early signs of dehydration include excessive panting, slowing down in the field and change in personality or attitude. If dehydration persists the skin on the back of neck will slowly return to the body if pinched. Another sign of dehydration is the slow return of the color pink to the dogs’ gums if they are pressed. Knowing the signs of dehydration in a dog could save his life.

The good news is preventing a dog from getting dehydrated is simple. Give them water regularly. Bringing a bottle of water and a collapsible dish into the field with you while hunting to give your dog water is a good idea. There are water supplements for dogs that are similar to sports drinks for people. Add the power supplement to his water and he’ll get an extra boost.
